Abstract

Aim. To study the tropeic organization of digital economic discourse on the material of small plotbased discursive forms by identifying and analyzing trope combinations involved in the plots of the analyzed discursive forms representing phenomena and events from the world of economics.

Methodology. The analysis of the empirical material, including 250 small plot-based discursive forms of economic content, selected by a continuous sampling method from Russian and English new media sources, was carried out within the framework of cognitive-discursive and anthropocentric scientific paradigms using the methods of contextual and stylistic analysis.

Results. The analysis shows that the tropeic representation of economic objects and phenomena is often carried out by visualizing classical verbal tropes in the small plot-based discursive formats reflecting the storyline and having a polycode structure. In the course of the study, it has been established that the plots of small plot-based discursive forms in digital economic discourse are generated on the basis of trope combinations, where the main elements are considered to be metaphor, metonymy, irony, hyperbole and personification, actively interacting with each other and generating a holistic structural and semantic unity that allows to adequately interpret the economic reality and form value orientations within the described economic situations.

Research implications. The factual material and findings can be used in the further investigation of digital types of discourse, as well as in teaching the theory of language, stylistics, discourse analysis, and pragmalinguistics.

Abstract

Aim. To conduct a comparative analysis of ethnic stereotypes in the texts of German and British media.

Methodology. The research is based on the framework of comparative analysis that allows to identify integral and differential features in German and British language cultures. Besides, random sampling is applied, which allows to increase the objectivity of the research.

Results. It is shown that differences prevail in the image of Germany and Great Britain in the texts of mass media. The autostereotypic and heterostereotypic image of the above-mentioned countries is described.

Research implications. A successful comparative analysis in the texts of German and British media has been conducted. The obtained data expand our knowledge about the paradigmatic interaction of linguistic means, which reflect stereotypes in various linguistic cultures. The research results can be applied in classes on foreign languages, cultural linguistics, comparative lexicology and in practice of international communication.

Abstract

Aim. To reveal the features of the interpretation of the concept sphere of a journalistic text about the Arab world architecture in the magazine “Around the World”.

Methodology. The linguistic-cognitive analysis of D. Vinogradov’s article “The Patchwork of Cairo Quarters” and “Not only skyscrapers: 6 unusual architectural projects of Abu Dhabi” was carried out, the main components of the concept sphere of these journalistic texts were determined.

Results. In the course of the analysis, it was concluded that D. Vinogradov’s articles “The Patchwork of Cairo Quarters” and “Not only skyscrapers: 6 unusual architectural projects of Abu Dhabi” have a concept sphere with two dominant concepts, CITY and ARCHITECTURE, which describe the architecture of Cairo and Abu Dhabi. These dominant concepts represent urban space as a space of culture combining both traditional and modern elements.

Research implications. The theoretical significance of this article lies in the generalization of the theoretical material on the problem of the construction and structure of the concept sphere of journalistic texts, the definition of the main characteristics of the concept sphere of such texts. The practical significance of the article is determined by the compilation of its own classification of the structural components of the conceptual sphere within the framework of the description of the architectural space on the example of the analysed material.

Abstract

Aim. To study the cognitive-semantic mechanisms of forming the meanings of legal terms and to reveal the invariance of their conceptual dominants as a condition for ensuring the comparability of concepts when translating.

Methodology. The methods of comparative, semantic, contextual, interpretive and discourse analysis are used in order to ensure compliance with the logical law of identity and to avoid semantic errors when conducting cognitive and semantic studies of terminology in comparative jurisprudence.

Results. The article considers different approaches to the translation of Spanish terms that have analogues in Russian inheritance law, but require clarification due to their polysemy – sucesión and herencia, as well as non-equivalent terms characteristic of Spanish inheritance law – colación and mejora and their derivatives.

Research implications. In the context of growing interest in comparative legal research, the article focuses on the difficulties of interpretation and translation of legal terms in legal discourse due to polysemy, synonymy, as well as non-equivalence of terms in different languages. Logical and discursive algorithms of translation are proposed, allowing to correlate the semantic volume of concepts expressed by professional terms of Spanish and Russian legal discourse for their adequate interpretation, excluding possible distortions or semantic uncertainty.

Abstract

Aim. To identify the most successful translation mechanisms for transmitting such a linguocultural phenomenon as humor from English into Russian using transposition. Particular attention is paid to the problem of representing the effect of comedy in the English-language picture of the world. In particular, the possibility of literal lexemes translation with the “humor” component is considered.

Methodology. In the course of the study, general and specific research methods are used: the continuous sampling method, comparative analysis of lexical means expressing comicality, the translation of culturally-marked vocabulary of British humor based on a method of component analysis of individual lexemes.

Results. The impossibility of literal translation of lexical units with a humor component requires the translator to either introduce a comment or abandon the original author's goals, which often leads to a distortion of the original meanings intended by the author.

Research implications. The paper contributes to the development of a linguoculturological approach to the study of culturally-marked vocabulary using transposition as a phenomenon of language and culture.

Abstract

Aim. To identify similarities and differences in the semantic structure of the “loss of face” concept in Russian and Chinese.

Methodology. In the course of the study, a comparative method was used with the involvement of definitional analysis, component analysis and contextual analysis.

Results. The analysis has shown that the interpretation of the lexical unit “face” in Chinese differs from Russian because in Chinese “face”, formed under the influence of the social norm, can denote person’s reputation; in Russian “face”, understood as something individual and unique, can denote distinctive features of a person, personality. In both languages, “face” represents a value that a person fears losing. The concept of “loss of face” has different features in different languages. In Russian “loss of face” not only refers to the loss of reputation, but can also mean that the face of an object or person is lost as a result of deformation, while in Chinese the concept of “loss of face” refers to the sphere of etiquette.

Research implications. Theoretical and practical significance is determined by the establishment of national-cultural components the semantics of the word “face” and in the designation of “loss of face” phraseological unit. In addition, the results obtained can be used in lexicographic practice as well as in teaching of Russian and Chinese.

Abstract

Aim. To show the realization of the general principles of versification according to the accent system specifics of the given language system.

Methodology. The well-known children’s poems by S. Ya. Marshak and the translations of these poems into German and English have been analyzed. Then, the rhythmic system of these poems has been defined. The comparative analysis has been applied to identify the general characteristics of the rhythm of a poetic text and to establish the specifics of the rhythmic system of children’s poetry in the present languages.

Results. The analysis has shown that in the considered children’s poems the time organization is clearly present. It can be explained by the clarity of the inner measure of the poems. In the given children’s poems speech measures follow each other equally which is achieved due to the correct distribution of the accent units.

Research implications. The study results can be applied in phonetics. They can be used in the study of the rhythmic peculiarities in the Russian, German and English languages, in the training courses on the theory of rhythm, as well as for methodological purposes in the teaching process in general, and in the teaching of the present languages rhythm specifics in particular.

Abstract

Aim. To analyze the Paraguayan media space for the presence of materials on the Guarani language and culture in it.

Methodology. The key research method used in this work is the analysis of the research material and the relevant academic literature. The analysis of the content of the articles of Correo Semanal, an electronic supplement to the Paraguayan daily newspaper Última Hora, was carried out. At the first stage of the study, all the texts of Última Hora in the period from 2010 to 2022 were considered by the method of continuous sampling, then 12 articles were selected from the total array of materials on topics that were relevant to this research. In addition, the author analyzes the socio-cultural context that led to the formation of the Paraguayan language community and the Paraguayan national identity, as well as the current sociolinguistic situation.

Results. In the course of the study, the author establishes the conditionality of Paraguayan national identity with the Guarani language and culture. As a result of the analysis, it was found that it was with the help of the media that the phenomenon of Paraguayan national identity was built, based mainly on the characteristics of its linguistic community. Despite the fact that the protection of national identity in the era of globalization is basic for Paraguayan society, the state and the media also pay attention to maintaining integration ties with the South American continent.

Research implications. The study establishes the priority of the Guarani language in the formation of the Paraguayan national identity. In addition, a provision is formulated on the prospects of diachronic studies of the Paraguayan media space for the presence of materials about the Guarani culture and language in them.

Abstract

Aim. Identification of linguistic features of Italian-language rap as a special textual genre as exemplified by Salmo’s lyrics.

Methodology. The method of continuous sampling was used to identify and list examples of phonetic and grammatical features specific to rap lyrics; the method of contextual and discourse analysis was applied in order to analyze why borrowings and culturally specific elements are used. The texts from the album “FLOP” and the single “Estate (Vabbè balliamo)” served as the research material.

Results. The results show that phonetically Italian rap has borrowed some features from American rap tradition, however it has preserved some specific features. The analysis of grammatical structures showed that literary Italian prevails and such grammatical phenomenon as subjunctive mood is not neglected. As for the lexical peculiarities, the borrowings from Spanish, French and Japanese are of interest, as well as the wide presence of culturally specific elements, which add imagery to the lyrics.

Research implications. In Russian linguistics the study of Italian-language rap is not widely represented, so a further analysis of the rap discourse in Italian will gather material to conduct comparative studies.
