Abstract

Aim. Identification of the linguistic and cultural specific features of the English language functioning on the territory of Nigeria.

Methodology. The research is based on the application of general scientific methods (analysis, generalization) and special methods (descriptive method, component analysis method, quantitative method).

Results. The most productive transformation processes of the English language of Nigeria due to the influence of creolization are revealed: monophthongization of diphthongs for the phonetic system; simplification of specific verb forms for the morphological system; use of high-frequency cultural borrowings from autochthonous languages for the lexical system.

Research implications is in the analysis of Nigerian English transformational processes potential due to complex language and culture symbiosis. The structure of Nigerian English is influenced by two key processes: indigenization and globalization which contributes to the preservation of its unique features, reflecting the specifics of the Nigerian linguistic culture.

Abstract

Aim. To reveal personal experience narratives as an effective technique of influence in stand-up discourse.

Methodology. The key research method was content analysis, which allowed us to identify the most frequent patterns of personal narratives in the performances of English-speaking comedians. The classification of the patterns was based on the typology of axiogenic situations proposed by V.I. Karasik.

Results. The high level of multimodality of stand-up discourse appealing to semantic, pragmatic and syntactic principles of joke construction has been proved, which substantiates the relevance of further research into the nature of the manipulative impact of stand-up comedians.

Research implications. The paper reveals the peculiarities of using narratives of personal experience as an effective technique of manipulative influence on the audience.

Abstract

Aim. To analyze the possibilities of verbalization of psychophysiological communication signs in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) based on the ethnic-linguistic-cultural Chinese value code, which translates the signs of the body "behavior" into a specific body communication with a person.

Methodology. Nonverbal and paraverbal means of body communication with a person are considered in the interpretive practice of TCM as a neuro-psychophysiological dialogue of the human body with its consciousness. The methodology is based on the psycholinguistic understanding of neurovegetative processes in the traditional culture of Chinese folk medicine and the principles of translation studies.

Results. The study showed that body language is interpreted in TCM as an interconnected complex system of nonverbal and paraverbal markers that transmit information about feelings and emotions both through nonverbal channels, including gestures, body position, facial expressions, and other paralinguistic techniques. This system of markers has a metaphorical character of euphemisms in TCM, which is due to the sacralization and taboo of the topics related to the vital activity of a human body.

Research implications. The theoretical significance of the study is associated with a new approach to the postulates and terminology of TCM from the standpoint of communication studies and neuropsycholinguistics, which provides a new look at the “language” of TCM.

Abstract

Aim. To clarify the differences between the actual translation and localization, as well as to trace how the identified differences affect the process of linguocultural adaptation of fragments containing phraseological units, set expressions and their variations for the Russian-speaking market.

Methodology. In the course of writing the work, the current scientific literature devoted to localization as a special type of linguocultural adaptation of texts was analyzed. A comparative analysis of a selection of quotes from the dialogues from the game “Divinity: Original Sin” was also carried out. The selection included phraseological units in a traditional form or creatively transformed by the authors of the game. The selected fragments were considered from the viewpoint of structure, origin and the presence of equivalents in Russian.

Results. On the basis of the considered theoretical and practical material, it has been established that in the course of the localization of computer games, the priority is given to the adequate transfer of the key content for going through the game and compliance with the technical requirements for the translation text, rather than to the artistic originality of the source text. This is especially noticeable when translating such difficult for linguistic and cultural adaptation units as phraseological units and their variations, since when localizing in-game dialogues, the possibility of using descriptive translation or explanations is extremely limited.

Research implications. The theoretical significance of the study lies in the fact that the work gives an attempt of further distinguishing between literary translation and localization of in-game artistic and narrative texts and dialogues. The practical significance is due to the fact that attention is paid to such an object of translation as phraseological units and how the translation of such units is complicated by the peculiarities of localization as a specific type of translation activity.
