Abstract

Aim. To identify onomasiological models of anatomical nominations in veterinary and animal husbandry, motivated by artifact metaphorical transfer.

Methodology. The onomasiological structure of professional nominations, including the basis, feature and predicate is analyzed. The linguistic implementation of onomasiological models in veterinary and zootechnical terms, motivated by the conceptual sphere of artifacts, is studied.

Results. Three groups of anatomical names are distinguished based on the features of the interaction of the onomasiological basis, feature and predicate: explicit and implicit comparison of the shape of a particular body part with a thing; metaphorical representation of the animal’s body as a result of the master’s work; identification of a part of the animal’s body with an artifact. The linguistic means of implementing the components of onomasiological models in each of the distinguished groups is characterized. A conclusion is made about the reflection in the studied nominations, on the one hand, of the traditional for medicine in general transfers “organism – mechanism, instrument, container”, and on the other hand – of the specific for animal anatomy ideas: anthropomorphism, likening the animal’s body to an object of manual labor.

Research implications. The results of the study can be used in compiling terminological glossaries for various sections of professional veterinary and zootechnical disciplines.

Abstract

Aim. To identify and systematize linguistic means of expressing the aspectual meanings of the French verb in comparison with the type-tense system of the verb system of the Russian language using the example of the mode of action of repetition.

Methodology. The synchronic approach, general scientific and particular linguistic methods are used in the example processing procedure: descriptive method, component, semantic types of analysis, and others.

Results. Linguistic means based on repetition are analyzed and generalized, forming the lexico-semantic category of the mode of action of the French verb; the essential characteristics of the method and type of verbal action and the status differences between them are revealed.

Research implications. The study establishes the role of repetition as the semantic basis of the aspectual meaning of a verbal action and the multilevel linguistic means of its expression.

Abstract

Aim. To describe the difficulties of sociocultural adaptation in translation practices and analyze the influence of the context on the adequacy of the translation.

Methodology. The methods of contextual as well as contrastive analysis were applied during the research based on selected authentic English and Russian texts in mass media and legal discourse.

Results. The work shows the need for conducting a multidimentional analysis of national cultural peculiarities of the original text and target language speakers in order to avoid probable translation mistakes.

Research Implications. To solve the problem of multiple terminology interpretations by recipients, including legal norms in Legalese, the hermeneutic-communication translation paradigm may be a good choice. The paper also lists examples of translation manipulations applied in working with English terminology.

Abstract

Aim. To consider the phenomenon of emphasis, verbalized by discourse markers in the English fiction of the XVIII century on the material of D. Defoe’s novel “Robinson Crusoe”. To identify semantic, grammatical and pragmatic features of emphatic discourse markers.

Methodology. The author uses the AntConc program to search for literary excerpts from the novel containing emphatic discourse markers and contextual analysis to describe emphatic discourse markers in the fictional discourse.

Results. The paper proves the functioning of discourse markers as a way to express emphasis and considers the semantic features of emphatic discourse markers. The author stresses the dominant role of connotative elements and suggests a typology of emphatic discourse markers by the connotative criterion. The paper illustrates the correlation of grammatical characteristics of emphatic discourse markers with their pragmatic functions.

Research implications. The research reveals the role of emphatic discourse markers in the creation of emotional and expressive statements, as well as the possibility of combining emphatic discourse markers on the basis of their connotative peculiarities.

Abstract

Aim. To reveal means of verbalizing the cognitive illusion as a mechanism of social consolidation in commemorative discourse, i.e. a combination of language-mediated social practices of collective remembrance.

Methodology. The research material is 800 small-format online texts of English-language commemorative discourse published from 2019 to 2024 by British, American, and Canadian politicians. The methods of the componential, conceptual, categorial, and cognitive-matrix analysis are used to model the “collective memory” as the central conceptual structure of commemorative discourse. The functioning of the mechanism of the cognitive illusion in commemorative discourse is described within the framework of Communication Accommodation Theory (CAT).

Results. It is found that the cognitive illusion is the key mechanism of consolidation in commemorative discourse in that it helps to create and maintain a “virtual museum of collective memory” essential to the social group’s identity. The “collective memory” can be represented as a matrix centred around the “otherness – sameness” conceptual opposition. The matrix brings together two main cognitive contexts with a permeable boundary between them – that of “Past/Future” and that of “Present”. The cognitive illusion helps to transcend the boundary between the two cognitive contexts through a system of “biases” (perspectives of interpretation), whose functioning gets explained in terms of CAT, in particular convergence and divergence.

Research implications. The article suggests a methodology for a joint cognitive-linguistic and communicative analysis and modeling of a virtual space which facilitates transmission of socially significant ideas in institutional discourse.

Abstract

Aim. To identify the features of the semantic structures of the words «ностальгия» / “nostalgia”, functioning in the Russian and English linguistic cultures.

Methodology. The language material was collected from explanatory, translation, etymological dictionaries, the English British National Corpus and the National Corpus of the Russian language, and the Google Books Ngram Viewer database was used. Comparative, contrastive, definitive, corpus, and descriptive methods of analysis were used.

Results. Based on the results of the study, similarities and differences in the shades of meaning of the semantic structures of the Russian word “nostalgiya” and its English equivalent were revealed.

Research implications. The practical value of the conducted research is connected with the potential possibilities of using the collected theoretical and linguistic material in the professional activities of a translator, lexicographer, terminologist, lexicologist, and teacher of foreign languages.

Abstract

Aim. This research aims to investigate the variation of imperative mood in dialogic scenes between passengers and drivers in Angkot, a popular mode of public transportation in Bandung, Indonesia, by applying syntax and speech act approaches to identify communicative strategies and understand the imperative power of public transportation (Angkot) drivers in Bandung City.

Methodology. A qualitative approach was applied in this research. The data were collected through audio recordings (with the driver’s permission) while traveling on the specified route.

Results. This study reveals that Angkot drivers predominantly use directive-imperative sentences, with commands (56.84%), advice (14.73%), and invitations (12.63%). These imperative sentences used by public transportation (Angkot) drivers play a crucial role in regulating and guiding their passenger behavior in the vehicle.

Research Implications. The research findings provide valuable insights into the dynamics of imperative sentences in the context of public transportation (Angkot) in Bandung City. It offers a comprehensive analysis of the communicative strategies used by drivers, classifying and identifying the types of imperative power, thereby enriching our understanding of discourse in public transportation interactions.

Abstract

Aim. To classify situational clichés of the military sphere of communication according to their communicative-pragmatic potential.

Methodology. Situational clichés were selected by corpus analysis from Russian and US military manuals. Phraseological analysis was a key research method. The comparative method, methods of linguocultural, contextual, historical-etymological and discourse analysis were also used in the work.

Results. The classification of situational clichés of the military sphere of communication by functional criterion was created. The polyfunctionality of situational clichés in military communication is established and the disproportion in the representation of units of different functional orientation is revealed. The degree character of idiomaticity of military situational clichés is proved. The national and cultural uniqueness of military situational clichés at the level of linguistic representation at the unity of pragmatic functions is revealed.

Research implications. Theoretical and practical significance lies in the development of a functional typology of situational clichés of military communication. The results of the study can be used in the theory and practice of military translation, intercultural communication, as well as in lexicographic practice.

Abstract

Aim. To reveal similarities and differences in the use of the subjunctive mood in subordinate clauses of purpose in Spanish and French.

Methodology. To achieve this aim, the article uses a descriptive method, the method of component analysis. In addition, the key research methods used in the article are the continuous sampling method, as well as comparative analysis.

Results. Controversial issues regarding the use of the subjunctive mood in subordinate clauses of purpose are identified, as well as the debatable problem of correlation of tenses in subordinate clauses of purpose in closely related languages. The use of the subjunctive mood is stable in subordinate clauses of purpose in two Romance languages, but the use of tenses in Spanish is more diverse than in French.

Research implications. The analysis is relevant for the comparative typology of two closely related languages (Spanish and French). The results obtained can be used in various courses of theory and practice of teaching Romance languages: theoretical and practical grammar, comparative typology.

Abstract

Aim. To identify semantic differences in derivative adverbs caused by the presence/absence of adjectivization of the producing words (participles).

Methodology. The author conducted a corpus study of adverbs with the suffix-weise, including observation, generalization and description of the meanings realized by them. Using the comparative method, subsequent established semantic similarities and transformations are carried out, conditioned by the status of the derivative base (participle or adjectival participle).

Results. The analysis showed that adverbs formed from participial adjectives correspond to evaluative sentence adverbs in terms of their semantic parameters. Adverbs based on a participle can express the meaning of simultaneity of actions, accompanying circumstances, compatibility or instrumentality.

Research implications. The study deepens the understanding of word-formation relations in language, in particular, the semantic determinacy of a derivative adverb by the meaning of the productive base.
