PECULIARITIES OF THE TRANSLATION OF RUSSIAN AND ENGLISH STATE TITLES IN XVI-XVII CENTURIES

Abstract

The paper reveals a specific aspect of translating early Russian and English terminological units which belong to the administrative and socio-political spheres. The author studies the peculiarities of rendering state ranks and titles of the XVI-XVII centuries from Russian into English and from English into Russian. The material under study is administrative and sociopolitical vocabulary of the charters exchanged between the Russian Tsar and the English Queen in the XVI-XVII centuries. Having conducted comparative research into the translations of these terminological units in the XVII and XIX centuries, the author comes to the conclusion that their characteristic feature is the variability and ambiguity caused by the lack of clear Russian and English correspondences.
