FUNCTIONAL LOSS IN HUMOUR TRANSLATION (COMPARISON OF «THE NIGHT WATCH» BY S. LUKYANENKO AND THE TRANSLATION BY A. BROMFIELD)

Abstract

The functional loss in humour translation through the example of «Night watch» by S. Lukyanenko is analyzed in the article. The research is based on Raskin's semantic theory of humour. Some linguistic and extralinguistic causes of inadequacy in translation are discussed. The author considers the potential possibility of opposed scripts actualization to create humorous effect as a way to achieve translation adequacy. As a result of the study the author comes to the conclusion that functional loss can be reduced with the help of some special lexical markers, and that the majority of loss cases are due to the lack of background knowledge.
