GENDER ATTRIBUTION OF TRANSLATED TEXTS AS A SPECIFIC CASE OF STUDY OF AN AUTHOR’S LINGUISTIC CONSCIOUSNESS

Abstract

The article dwells on the peculiarities of gender attribution of translations of the novel “Anna Karenina” into English. The analysis is held in accordance with the algorithm developed by the author of the article. The research shows that linguistic consciousness of a translator who adapts his / her translation to the manner of the author of the opposite sex is of the utmost interest for gender text analysis. Being in fact a secondary text, the text of translation nevertheless possesses all features of a text and all characteristics of an original literary text are preserved in the text of translation. One of such characteristics is an author’s gender attribution reflected in the text. Preserving this characteristic is an essential condition for achieving equivalence in translation.
