Abstract

The article is concerned with the approaches to philosophy of language in the Medieval Hebrew linguistics. The previous research in the field paid little attention to the question. Our main aim is to prove the Greek influence on Hebrew philosophy of language. The results of the present research are based on the analysis of ancient sources - the Torah, Midrash Bereshit Rabba, Massoretic tradition and the works by the earliest Hebrew grammarian Saadia Gaon, as well as Indian, Greek and Arabic texts. The analogical approach used in the paper helps to identify some features common to all the traditions as well as some peculiarities of Hebrew philosophy of language. The research shows that the corpus of Jewish sacred texts contains no explanation of the existence of the speech. According to the Midrash the language of creation was Hebrew. The earliest attempt to solve the problem of origins of the language was made in the first half of the 10th century by Saadia Gaon. He argued that the language is a product of the convention. Saadia’s ideas were deeply influenced by Ancient Greek philosophy. The results of the work could be used for educational and methodological purposes.
