Abstract

Aim. To identify and systematize the different and coinciding characteristics of the image of a мухи / fly in English and Russian linguocultures to create an onomasiological portrait of an insect.

Methodology. The research material was data obtained by continuous sampling from Russian- and English-language dictionaries (14 sources). The analysis reveals a number of features inherent in the image of the fly in English and Russian linguistic cultures. Based on the considered examples of paroemias and phraseological units, the authors illustrate the point that the considered linguistic cultures have similar and distinctive characteristics inherent in only the one linguistic culture.

Results. Based on the selected paroemias and phraseological units, an ambiguous image of a fly / муха is formed, in which there are not only negative features associated with the insectophone, but also a number of positive traits.

Research implications lie in the fact that the results of the study can serve as a systematic approach to the analysis of onomasiological portraits of insectophones in English and Russian linguistic cultures. This approach should be applied in the framework of phonosemantic studies when it comes to lexical units with an onomatopoietic basis.
