Linguistic and cognitive mechanisms of implementing self-deprecating humour in the discourse of “entertaining humiliation” (on the material of the English stand-up shows)

Abstract

Aim. To identify and analyse linguistic means of expressing self-deprecating humour in stand-up shows as a special type of humorous discourse.

Methodology. To establish linguistic, stylistic and pragmatic characteristics of the stand-up show texts contextual and cognitive-discourse analysis was used.

Results. The research proves the high pragmatic potential of “entertaining humiliation”; presents its thematic classification; reveals the most common linguistic (hyperbole, simile, irony, contrast, personification) and extralinguistic (gestures and facial expressions) means that create humorous effect in the stand-up shows.

Research implications. The research may expand the understanding of the category of the comic as well as the functioning of humorous discourse within the modern media space.
