Abstract

Aim. To study the semantic field of the root *ghos-ti- in PIE (the Proto-Indo-European language), divide Modern English lexical units with the etymological root *ghos-ti- into groups according to their formal and semantic features.

Methodology. The main research methods are the comparative-historical method and the descriptive-analytical method, which includes classification, comparison and generalization of the lexical units under study.

Results. The study showed that lexis with the root *ghos-ti- came into English through Proto-Germanic, Latin and Ancient Greek. Modern English lexical items with this root were grouped based on their meaning and form.

Research implications. The data on semantic and word-formative development of vocabulary, which emerged from the root *ghos-ti-, has been extended and updated. A classification of modern English lexemes with this root has been proposed.
