Composition and content of conclusions in German opinion pieces

Abstract

Aim. To study the composition and the content aspect of the final part of opinion pieces in the German media and describe the linguistic mechanisms for the implementation of the journalists’ intentions.
Methodology. A structural and content analysis of German opinion pieces was carried out, ways of implementing the position of the authors in their articles were identified, as well as the potential of language components to increase the impact on recipients.
Results. The conclusions of the author of the opinion pieces include three main components: marking the transition from the argumentative to the summarizing part of the commentary, formulating one's own position and appealing to readers or listeners.
Research implications. The study clarifies the specifics of the genre of “opinion piece” at the present stage of media development. The practical significance is determined by the applicability of the research results in training sessions on rendering newspaper materials, as well as in journalistic practice.
