Resian microlanguage: the endangered Slavic language of Italy

Abstract
Aim. To assess the state of the Resian microlanguage in the conditions of the prevailing Italian and under the influence of the Slovene language.
Methodology. In accordance with A. D. Dulichenko's theoretical setting, Resian is considered as a ‘literary microlanguage’ with its own written tradition developed in different dialects. Grammatical and lexical features of the idiom are demonstrated in comparison with parallel texts of Slovene (also of Italian), while comparison of written samples of different Resian dialects shows their phonetic differences.
Results. The analysis allowed us to demonstrate significant differences between Resian and Slovene, due not only to the preservation of Сommon Slavic archaic features in Resian, but also to divergent development in an isolated position of Resia and contact with Romance languages.
Research implications. The features of the Resian idiom illustrated in the article can contribute to maintaining its status as a literary microlanguage different from Slovene. This gives chances to preserve an archaic idiom with a small number of speakers defending their own identity in the conditions of Italian dominance.
