Abstract

Aim. The purpose of this article is to identify the methods used for interlingual transfer of zoonyms in literary translation.

Methodology. All analyzed instances of interlingual transfer were characterized by criteria related to the source zoonym, its context, and the zoonym inserted by the translator. The main methods of research are description, comparison, quantitative analysis, and contextual analysis.

Results. The study concludes that the origin of a zoonym is the most powerful factor influencing the choice of the interlingual transfer method. In addition, the traditions of the source language have a noticeable influence: the Spanish translation was found to lean towards foreignization.

Research implications. The research results contribute to systematizing techniques used for interlingual transfer of zoonyms and can be used to formulate recommendations in this field.
