General and special questions of studying special vocabulary (by the example of special vocabulary of animation)

Abstract
Aims. 1. To identify and analyze some general issues in the field of studying specific vocabulary: the development of terms studies, the linguistic status of the term, ambivalent interpretations of the “term” concept, “defective” peculiarities of terms, linguistic ways of making terms; groups of words in specialized communication (terms – professional words, or “professionalisms” – professional jargon – special proper names, or “onims”). 2. To study some particular terminological issues in a definite work field – animation: ways of making terms and other specific groups of words; lexical and semantic transformations of the common language words caused by semantic adaptations due to the necessity of giving names to specialized information; terms based on tropes; the pragmatic function of terms in the professional activity of the Disney Studio workers; significance of the proper name Disney both for animation and linguistic and cultural concepts in the whole American culture.
Methodology. The research material is definition and etymological English dictionaries of, terminological dictionaries, memoirs of animation workers and specialists in this field, thematic Internet sources. The main method of the research is the linguistic one, based on such analyses as historical, etymological, contextual, cognitive and the component analysis method which involves analysis of lexical units dictionary definitions.
Results. Animation terminology is connected to definite visual symbols at the intersection of linguistics and semiotics. Animation terminology is the result of cognition, linguistic creativity and and its involvement into creation of a rich word-building potential of the English language.
Research implications. The research contributes to broadening the ideas on efficiency of complex approach which combines linguistic, lingo-cognitive and semiotic analysis methods. It studies the processes of building specific vocabulary of animation. The practical implication lies in the possibility to apply the results of this study in carrying out further research into specific vocabulary of animation.
