MOSES AND PETER, OR MOSHE AND KEFA? (ABOUT THE REPRESENTATION OF THE PROPER NAMES IN BIBLE TRANSLATIONS)

Aim. To investigate some aspects of the representation of the proper names in Bible translations and their comparison with the existing traditions of the latter. Methodology. The authors study the principles of the said representation in different versions and the reasons that determined the using of the method of interlingual transition in them. Some of the particular variants are also analyzed. Results. In the translations of the Old Testament the maintenance of the existing tradition, on one hand, and on the other hand, the wish to follow the norms of the source text could be found. In Russian versions the said tendency is demonstrated most vividly by representatives of the Judaic tradition. Beginning with the Reformation period the Protestant translations followed the Hebrew text of the Old Testament, but most of them took into account the graphic / phonetic form established in European tradition. Although Greek was the source language of the New Testament, some versions try to ‘hebraicize’ its anthroponyms by analogy with the Old Testament. Research implications. The factual material presented in the paper, as well as the conclusions based on its analysis may be used in the further investigations of the interlingual transference of the proper names and in teaching the theory and practice of translation.
