Abstract
Aim. To study the evaluative modality in short stories. Methodology. The text is considered as a result, product and process of speech activity. Using the basic contextual-semantic method, the author of the article identifies evaluative modality that has an important role in the plot of a short story. The other methods of the research are communicative, paradigmatic and cognitive approaches for the analysis of a literary text. Results. The results of the study are the cognitive component of a literary text; the relationship between evaluation and modality as the components of speech activity; specific features of evaluation modality in the texts of short stories. Research implications. The research results contribute to the text linguistics, theory of style and deepen the understanding of cognitive science. The description of evaluation as a cognitive component in a literary text is original, because evaluative semantics is the determining factor of statements and has not been fully described in linguistics or in the similar disciplines of the humanities.
