https://doi.org/10.18384/2949-5075-2025-6-6-19

Abstract

Aim. The study describes the modifications of pan‑Hispanic proverbs in the Internet discourse of Panamanian national variety of Spanish and identifies their functions and sociocultural conditioning.

Methodology. A corpus of 162 modified proverbs was collected by continuous sampling from the Panamanian segment of social networks, blogs, forums and online mass media in 2021–2023. The study uses content analysis, structural and semantic analysis, modelling, classification, descriptive and analytical methods, and elements of the cognitive‑discursive approach.

Results. The analysis shows that these modifications form a stable zone of active paremiological creativity related to digital culture and the national cultural specifics of Panama. Four main types of transformations and their communicative functions are distinguished.

Research implications. The study refines the conceptual framework of Internet paremiology and proposes a typology of proverb modifications for the Panamanian national variety of Spanish. The results can be used to describe Panamanian national variety of Spanish, to teach Spanish as a foreign language, and to design courses in Cultural and Internet linguistics.
