Abstract

Aim. To reveal similarities and differences in the use of the subjunctive mood in subordinate clauses of purpose in Spanish and French.

Methodology. To achieve this aim, the article uses a descriptive method, the method of component analysis. In addition, the key research methods used in the article are the continuous sampling method, as well as comparative analysis.

Results. Controversial issues regarding the use of the subjunctive mood in subordinate clauses of purpose are identified, as well as the debatable problem of correlation of tenses in subordinate clauses of purpose in closely related languages. The use of the subjunctive mood is stable in subordinate clauses of purpose in two Romance languages, but the use of tenses in Spanish is more diverse than in French.

Research implications. The analysis is relevant for the comparative typology of two closely related languages (Spanish and French). The results obtained can be used in various courses of theory and practice of teaching Romance languages: theoretical and practical grammar, comparative typology.
