Abstract

Aim. To interpret from an intercultural point of view the folk culture presented in the classical Chinese novel “A Dream of Red Mansions”, so that readers who speak the target language could accurately understand and perceive the information and connotations of the folk culture in the novel, which reflects the customs and culture of all social classes in the middle of the Qing Dynasty.
Methodology. The research material was collected by sampling examples from the novel “A Dream of Red Mansions” and their translation into Russian and studied with the help of comparative analysis and theory of translation.
Results. “A Dream of Red Mansions” is a kind of “window” that allows foreigners to better understand China. In the Russian translation of the novel “A Dream of Red Mansions”, V. A. Panasyuk uses translation strategies such as naturalization, compensation and rewriting to make it easier for target readers to understand the folk customs and culture represented in the novel, which is a useful source of inspiration for the translation and dissemination of modern Chinese culture.
Research implications. The intercultural interpretation of the folk culture of V. A. Panasyuk in the novel “A Dream of Red Mansions” serves as a reference point for the external dissemination of Chinese culture. It strives to convey the culture of the original language through naturalization, compensation and adaptation, and has shown good results.
