Abstract

Aim. To study the thematic scope, emotiveness and techniques for translating connotational meanings of English news headlines into the Russian language.
Methodology. The material was collected by means of random sampling of the news and the Russian translations, and analyzed with the help of the quantitative and semantic (contextual and componential) analysis.
Results. Most frequent thematic areas of news coverage were identified, and the proportion of polar emotional meanings was calculated (negative 65% and positive 35%). The main strategies for translating emotive connotations of the English news headlines into Russian were recognized: 1) equivalent substitution (30%); 2) emotive intensity modification – mainly towards its increase (30%); 3) neutralization and emotive uplift (40%). On average, the degree of emotiveness increased by 1.56. The techniques for connotational meaning representation in the Russian translations were described: epithets, metaphors, evaluative lexis, superlative adjectives, euphemisms, citations, direct speech, syntactic transformations.
Research implications. The obtained results can be of interest for contrastive studies of news headlines and linguistic means of emotive representation in English and Russian media discourse. The results can be used in teaching translation of emotive lexis and connotational meanings of news headlines from English into Russian.
