Abstract

Aim. To describe difficulties of sociocultural adaptation in translation practices, and analyze the influence of the context on the translation adequacy as well as the reasons of translation errors.

Methodology. Such methods of empirical analysis as the contextual analysis as well as contrastive analysis were applied during the research based on selected authentic English and Russian texts in mass media, legal and scientific discourse.

Results. The work presents generalization and structuring of a significant array of data. The need for carrying out a multidimentional analysis of national cultural peculiarities of the original text and target language speakers, in order to avoid translation mistakes, is substantiated as well.

Research implications. The authors develop the theory of the cultural component of meaning detected in the process of the lexical-semantic analysis of terminological units in the humanitarian fields of knowledge, and focus on the sociocultural and pragmatic aspects of interlingual translation. The paper provides examples of translation manipulations applied in working with English terminology. The article will be of interest to teachers of foreign language faculties and translators.
