The evolution of the folk word: from paremias to internet memes

https://doi.org/10.18384/2310-712X-2023-2-6-30

Abstract

Aim. To systematize transformational processes in Russian Internet memes considered as modern paremias, taking into account their structural organization, semantics, linguistic creativity, and pragmatic potential.

Methodology. The corpus of Internet memes regarded as modern paremias, selected by the continuous sampling method for the period of 2020-2022, was analyzed. The study was conducted within the framework of the cognitive-discursive paradigm, anthropocentric approach and the theory of metaphor using the content analysis method.

Results. In the course of the study, the main transformation processes of traditional paremias in Russian Internet memes were analyzed, and the most productive transformation types were identified. It has been established that Internet memes, considered as modern paremias, have a metaphorical nature. Based on this statement, the main sphere-sources and sphere-targets of Internet memes paremiologization were identified.

Research implications. The factual material and conclusions based on its analysis can be used in the further investigation of paremiology and Internet communication, as well as in teaching the theory of language, linguocultural studies, pragmalinguistics, text interpretation, and lexicographic practice.
