German landscape discourse: social and cultural aspects (based on the novel by U. Timm “The snake tree”)

Abstract

Aim. To examine the landscape discourse of U. Timm’s novel “The Snake Tree” from the view point of cognitive pragmatics considering social and cultural factors.

Methodology. The research is based on the framework of content analysis that allows a step-by-step procedure for analysis of the landscape discourse fragments in order to conduct their content analysis, identify the key notions and subtopics of landscape discourse in the novel, reveal manifestations of social and cultural factors, and interpret their impact on the understanding of the author’s intent.

Results. The importance of landscape discourse for the author’s concept is proved, the influence of social and cultural factors on the formation of explicit and implicit content is substantiated, the collision of two societies and cultures in the novel landscape is described, the method of explicit and implicit contrasting as new and known in the aspect of culture is analyzed.

Research implications. The research investigates the potential of landscape discourse in the novel as a poly-discursive education by means of social and cultural aspects of its analysis.which complements the model of topic-oriented discourse.
