THE SEMANTICS OF PREFERRED ESTIMARTIONS IN ENGLISH PROVERBS AND SATYINGS: THE 'REVESED' EVALUATIVE SCALES

Abstract

The given article touches upon the evaluative semantics in English proverbs and sayings. The images in English proverbs and sayings reveal the system of evaluative scales, the so called "preferred estimations. In the above mentioned utterances there exist a number of units where the evaluative potential of an image may be changed under the influence of some factors. In these proverbs and sayings a new evaluative scale appears, valid in a definite speech situation.
