SEMANTICS OF PROTO-INDO-EUROPEAN *PER-/PRO- DERIVATIVESIN OLD ENGLISH

Abstract
The article is the result of research focused on the semantics of Old English words (ge)fyrn, feor(r), fruma which are considered as derivatives of Proto-Indo-Eropean root *per-/*pro- <*pr̥-. It is argued that spatial meaning of the root was absorbed by the temporal one and semantic volume of these nouns expanded due to the meanings of respect and distinction The research is based on the analysis of codified meanings of the words and contextual analysis of their use in Old English texts.
