<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The way the concepts of authority and subordination are realized in Shakespeare’s piece “The Tempest”, is considered in the article against the background of the ideas of correlation of God’s power and earthly authority in the Bible and the culture of English Renaissance. The author analyzes parallel subplots and symbolic details of the play “Tempest”, bringing out a marked contrast between Prospero and other characters endowed with power. Special attention is paid to the way these subplots and details reflect the opposition between God’s and the Devil’s power over humans, deeply rooted in the mindset of Shakespeare’s contemporaries, and how this opposition is reflected in the meaning and connotations of the words in which the concepts of authority and subordination are realized.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>английская литература</kwd><kwd>Возрождение</kwd><kwd>Шекспир</kwd><kwd>пьеса «Буря»</kwd><kwd>концепт</kwd><kwd>власть</kwd><kwd>подчинение</kwd><kwd>иерархия</kwd><kwd>правитель</kwd><kwd>English literature</kwd><kwd>Renaissance</kwd><kwd>Shakespeare</kwd><kwd>piece “The Tempest”</kwd><kwd>concept</kwd><kwd>power</kwd><kwd>authority</kwd><kwd>subordination</kwd><kwd>hierarchy</kwd><kwd>governor</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">A Catechisme // The Book of Common Prayer.
