<trans-abstract xml:lang="en"><p>The article gives an overview of key points in the linguistic theory of British scientist Michael Halliday, the pupil and follower of John Firth. The author briefly describes how Halliday's scientific views were formed, then concentrates on basic principles of systemic functional theory of linguistics including interpretation of the core theoretical notions such as language, text, metafunction, meaning. Analysis of Halliday’s views, given in his books and also of some critical essays by other linguists is given. An attempt to evaluate Halliday’s legacy and show how his ideas are received by other scholars is made.</p></trans-abstract><kwd-group xml:lang="ru"><kwd>язык</kwd><kwd>текст</kwd><kwd>функция</kwd><kwd>метафункция</kwd><kwd>система</kwd><kwd>структура</kwd><kwd>language</kwd><kwd>text</kwd><kwd>function</kwd><kwd>metafunction</kwd><kwd>system</kwd><kwd>structure</kwd></kwd-group></article-meta></front><back><ref-list><title>References</title><ref id="cit1"><label>1</label><citation-alternatives><mixed-citation xml:lang="ru">Halliday M.A.K.
